It's not uncommon to have to give up a cat due to allergies. When I was born, I had an allergy which would result in me going into asthmatic failure if I ate corn, but at the time my parents didn't know what caused my reaction. So it was trial and error until they found what the cause was. Of course they initially took out the obvious allergies: nuts, dairy, wheat, grains, or sugar. But after a while there was no change. My sister was only 3-4 at the time, and she had a little kitten that was all hers. My parents didn't know what to do next, so they thought maybe I had a pet allergy. They had to make the hard decision to get rid of the kitten, even though I actually was never allergic to cats.
